It was repeatedly described how hard he worked and that he made various accomplishments with his calculation abilities. Even if his brother outshined him with the various formulas Yan Hao calculated for him, it sounds like Yan Hao would have still been a much needed asset with his proven skills based on Old Zhe’s comments. I guess it makes sense if the brother literally stole all his achievements or if Yan Hao’s bad reputation discouraged all of his potential mentors despite the benefits.
